EF English Proficiency Index

The EF English Proficiency Index (EPI) measures the average English proficiency of an entire country and compares English skill levels between countries. It is the first index of its kind to give countries a standardized measure of English competency in adults.

The index uses a unique set of test data from 2.3 million adults who took free online English tests over a period of 3 years.Because this group of test takers is so diverse and the entry barrier to taking an online test is so low, the resulting scores are far more representative of the average English level of adults than other worldwide English tests previously used to compare countriesThere is no incentive for students to prepare for or cheat on our tests, as the results are entirely for their own use.Like other international tests which compare science, math and reading skills in schoolchildren around the world, the EF EPI aims to compare adult English proficiency on a global scale.
